Know More About Basil Essential Oils : Botanical Name , Species , Odour
Basil Essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of the basil plant. It is a thin essential oil in its consistency and is normally clear in color. It has very sweet-spicy, green- fresh, with a faint balsamic-woody undertone and with lasting sweetness.
Basil is a top note, and can often times overpower other essential oils when creating blends or synergies.
Aromatically, Basil essential oil is typically sweet, herbaceous, and slightly campherous. At times, you will detect a slight hint of fennel or black licorice aroma. This aroma will of course vary depending upon the type of essential oil you purchase and where it was grown and harvested.
For instance, Basil essential oils that are higher in Linalool will often times offer a more appealing aroma.
The key differentiator, and identifier, continues to be found in the Latin name of the particular essential oil you purchase.
Extraction Process of Basil Essential Oils :
- Â If 1 ton of sweet basil herb is distilled, an oil yield of 4-6 kg can be expected. Thus, a total basil oil yield from three harvests could be 100-120 kg/ha (40-50 kg/acre).
- After the essential oil is separated from the water and collected, some water will still remain. Contact with water results in the deterioration of the essential oil. The remaining water should be removed using a separating funnel (2).
